Composer's Biography
Chen Yao
Yao Chen's musical compositions and research are deeply rooted in the music traditions of the East and the West, as well as in the contemporary fusing of the two. Film and theatrical influences have led his creativity to broader compositional platforms and multiple musical genres. After arriving in the United States in 2001, he has gradually developed as a composer with a distinctive voice in many international arenas. His music has been performed by the Saint Paul Chamber Orchestra, Orchestre National de Lorraine, Winnipeg Symphony Orchestra, Pacifica String Quartet, Diotima Quatuor, eighth blackbird sextet, Camerata Woodwind Quintet, New Fromm Players, TianYing Chinese Ensemble, Beijing New Music Ensemble, as well as many renowned musicians. He has received commissions, prizes and honors from Radio France, Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra, Barnett Foundation Flute Competition, Art Institute of Chicago & Silk Road Chicago Project, TMSK Liu Tianhua Composition Competition, ECU NewMusic Orchestra Composition Competition, and American Society of Composers, Authors, and Publishers, etc. Yao has shared his music with audiences at many music festivals throughout the world, including the Paris’s Festival Presences, Tanglewood Music Festival, Aspen Music Festival, Centre Acanthes, Pacific Music Festival, Moscow International Accordion Competition, June In Buffalo Festival and many other music festivals. A native of China, Yao began his formal training in composition at Xinghai Conservatory of Music and Central Conservatory of Music in China. Currently he is completing his doctoral degree at the University of Chicago, where he studies with world-renowned composers Shulamit Ran and Marta Ptaszynska. He has taught at the University of Chicago, and University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign School of Music. (More information at www.composeryaochen.com)
