Composer's Biography
Kwangsun Hwang
Kwangsun Hwang was born in Cheon-an city in South Korea in May 4th, 1977. He has played the piano, guitar and drum since he was 13 and he likes to play various genre of music. He started studying music composition at the age of 18 and he earned his Bachelor’s degree from Hoseo University in Korea (2005) and studied with Jeasung Ahn and Iedon Oh. He received his Master’s degree from University of Texas at Austin (2009) and studied with Russell Pinkston, Donald Grantham, Bruce Pennycook and Yevgeniy Sharlat. He is pursuing his PhD degree in music composition at the UCLA Herb Alpert School of Music with Paul Chihara, Ian Krouse, Roger Bourland and David Lefkowitz. He was selected as one of the composers and presented his music at the 12th Contemporary Music Festival in Deajeon (2003). He awarded “Henry Mancini Award” from Mancini foundation (2009, 2010) and “Lalo Schifrin Award” (2010). After the year 2000, he became an active conductor in many facilities. He was selected as “The Best New Conductors of the Year” by the Korean Conductors Association and conducted Su-won Philharmonic Orchestra (2005). His music has been performed by numerous ensembles and soloist throughout the Korea and the U.S. He is also writing music for film. He worked for movie director Terrence Marlick (2009) and has worked on many films and animations.
