Composer's Biography
Rachel Matthews
Pianist & composer Rachel Matthews has performed across the US, Canada and Europe. She has appeared at venues such as the 92nd Street Y in New York, the Curtis Institute in Philadelphia, the Corcoran Gallery in Washington, DC, and on the Accueil Musical series in Paris, and at festivals including Banff, Taos, and the Festival Tibor Varga. She served for nine years as co-Artistic Director of the Foothills Chamber Music Festival, presenting chamber music performances with principal players of the Metropolitan Opera Orchestra, the Cleveland Orchestra and other major American ensembles. Increasingly active in recent years as a composer, her works have been heard recently at the International Viola Congress, the University of North Carolina School of the Arts, the Cottonwood Music Festival, the Iowa Arts Festival, Washington Composers Forum, and Pendulum New Music, as well as on radio stations around the US. Rachel is recent winner of the Maurice Gardner Composition Competition, and she has received grants and commissions from organizations including the American Composers Forum; 4Culture; Seattle Office of Arts and Cultural Affairs; and Jack Straw Productions. Her Voices of Trees for clarinet and piano was released in 2008 on the Origin Classical label, and a full-length CD of her works is currently in preparation. Rachel is a graduate of the Oberlin Conservatory and the University of North Carolina School of the Arts, and holds a Doctorate from the Peabody Conservatory. She maintains a vibrant and active independent teaching studio in Seattle.
